It is a popular misconception that maternal weight gain in an indicator of fetal well being. There are several indicators of well being of the fetus. However, weight gain during pregnancy is not an effective indicator of a healthy pregnancy.
The amount of weight you gain during your pregnancy also largely depends on your weight before you conceived. Pregnancy weight gain also has certain guidelines. The weight you gain during pregnancy should not significantly change your Body Mass Index.
If you had a healthy weight before getting pregnant, you should ideally only gain 6.75 kg – 11.25 kg during pregnancy. The ideal weight gain during the first trimester is about 0.45 – 2.25 kilograms. In the next two semesters, you will ideally gain about half a kilogram every week. If your baby is growing optimally, usually this will be the kind of weight gain that you should expect during this time.
