Preschools Are Robbing Kids of Their Childhood Tweet
In the UK, Richard House from Roehampton University’s Research Centre for Therapeutic Education has criticised the government for treating kids as “mini-adults”, thus, robbing them of their chance to enjoy their precious childhood years.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework, a child under the age of five is supposed to achieve at least 69 learning targets. This, they believe, will make children fully ready once they attend full-time education.
Dr House believes that making preschool very academic causes children to have lots of anxieties and preoccupations. Biddy Youell, head of child psychotherapy at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, argues that a child’s early years should be devoted to a child’s foundational development so every child should be given lots of opportunities for play. She also said that young children learn through games, and often get confused when schools convey the message that learning and playing are different. Youell also adds that computer games and electronic toys are not very helpful in developing a child’s communication and social skills.
What do you think about the preschool education in our country? Does it allow our kids to develop in an environment that’s free of stress and anxieties?

Yes i Agree playschools do rob children if their childhood. My 2 and 1/2 yr old daughter and many more children even 3-5 yr olds loose their natural inquisitiveness, playfulness within a few days in pre-school.Not all such schools in our neighbourhood have the quality of teachers and activities specifically planned for children of this age. Also we lack good teachers who have good knowledge of child psychology and thereby of handling children, for whom it’s the first ever independent experience. In majority of playschools in India it all boils down to confining the child and preparing her to follow a set routine with the same old methods and content. It’s a sad scenario and we got to work upon right education and training of teachers and the other staff in school and also the activities, which makes it a pleasant experience for the child.
