Because TV sets are continuously on or almost always on in households, little children are having a hard time trying to understand what the adults around them are saying. So even if kids are not watching television, just the background noise from these “magic boxes” are sure to hinder their speech and language development.

Because parents are very busy, they often use the television as substitute babysitters. They leave their children to watch television while they go about doing their chores. This limits the children’s exposure to language from “real human beings” making them unable to respond to people talking to them.

This report should be a challenge for parents to interact more with their kids by reading to them, telling them stories or teaching them nursery rhymes. Experts say that children who have a good foundation in learning their native language often do well later on in life.
