Date and time of birth — that's all it takes for the nakshatra, pada, rashi and the name's first syllable. Plus the thing nobody else shows: exactly when the star begins and ends, for checking against the panchang.

Find the birth star

Enter the date and time of birth — the nakshatra, pada, rashi and the name's first syllable appear right here. No time? It still works; we'll tell you plainly how firm the answer is.

Calculations use the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa — the one adopted by the Government of India's Calendar Reform Committee. Other systems (Raman, Krishnamurti) differ by a degree or two, which can change the star for births near a boundary. That is a difference of tradition, not an error. If your family astrologer says otherwise, ask which ayanamsa they use.

Why this calculator asks for the time

Most free nakshatra calculators ask only for the date. The Moon crosses one nakshatra in about twenty-four and a half hours — which means the star changes at some point almost every day, and an answer worked out from the date alone can be a coin toss.

So this tool asks for the time too. If the time isn't known, we calculate for 12 noon — and we say so next to the result instead of hiding it. The result also shows exactly when the nakshatra begins and ends, so you can check it against the family panchang.

Calculations use the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa — the one adopted by the Government of India's Calendar Reform Committee. If the family astrologer's answer differs, the reason is usually the ayanamsa system, not a mistake.

From nakshatra to name

In the tradition, the pada of the birth nakshatra decides the name's first syllable — each pada has its own, and the full table of all four is on every nakshatra page below.

It is a tradition, not a rule — keeping the nakshatra syllable for the pet name and choosing the school name freely is just as common. Both roads start from this tool: the syllable is here, and the star's full page is one click away.

Each nakshatra's page carries its ruling planet, deity, symbol, and the rashi and syllable of all four padas. A verified list of names is in preparation — it will join those pages when it is ready.

Frequently asked questions

Q: The birth time is completely unknown — how reliable is the answer? — Worked from the date alone, the nakshatra comes out right most of the time, but can be wrong on a day the star changed. Look at the start and end times in the result — a birth in the middle of that window is a firm answer; near the edge, confirm with the family's panditji.

Q: The calculator and our panditji disagree — whose mistake? — Possibly nobody's. Different ayanamsa systems (Lahiri, Raman, Krishnamurti) differ by a degree or two, and near a boundary that much can change the star. Ask which system your panditji uses.

Q: Is the rashi here from the Moon or the Sun? — The Moon — that is the Indian birth-rashi tradition. The English 'zodiac sign' runs on the Sun, which is why the two answers often differ. The naming tradition follows the Moon rashi; the Western sign is shown in brackets for the curious.

Q: Does the nakshatra decide the child's nature or future? — That is a question of faith, not science — and this page makes no claim about it. We give the panchang's traditions exactly as the tradition holds them, and keep the mathematics (the Moon's position) as exact as astronomy demands.
