
Sorting looks like tidying and is actually the first maths a child does — noticing a property, grouping by it, and explaining why.
Before a child can count meaningfully, they need to see that objects have properties — colour, size, shape, texture, use — and that things can be grouped by them. That is classification, and every later mathematical idea sits on it.
It also builds the language of comparison: bigger, smaller, more, fewer, same, different. Children who have those words find number work far easier.
Almost none of this needs bought material. An Indian kitchen contains more sorting material than any toy shop.

Sorting by one property, then re-sorting the same objects by a different one — colour first, then size. That step is where the real thinking happens.

Matching pairs: shoes, socks, lids to containers, keys to locks.
Sorting into more than two groups, then into groups the child invents themselves — which is the hardest and best version.
Talk while they work, and use the words: 'you put all the big ones here', 'which pile has more?', 'these are the same, these are different'.
Ask 'why did you put that there?' rather than correcting. A child who sorts by a rule you did not expect — everything that is shiny, everything that is Papa's — is doing exactly what they should.
Then move to counting the groups, comparing which has more, and lining them up to compare length. That is the bridge from sorting into number.
Keep it short and stop before it becomes a task. Sorting is a game until an adult turns it into an exercise.
Q: My four-year-old can count to fifty but cannot say which pile has more. — Very common. Reciting numbers is memory; understanding quantity is different and comes from exactly this kind of work. Sort, compare and count objects rather than practising the sequence.
Q: Is small-object sorting safe? — Not for under-threes without close supervision, because of choking. Use large items — spoons, socks, blocks — for the youngest and small items only with an adult at the table.
Q: Should I buy sorting toys? — Not necessary. Buttons, dals, bottle caps, clothes pegs, socks and cutlery do the job better because they are real.
Q: How do I know they are ready for numbers? — When they can group, compare and match one-to-one — one spoon for each plate. That last skill is the real signal.
