Nothing shows outside, but inside the pace is at its peak — the brain is adding thousands of cells a minute. And your relationship with the kitchen is at its most complicated.
The biggest part of this week's embryo is the head — and the proportion is no error. The brain is the fastest-growing organ right now, adding cells at a rate never to be repeated in this lifetime.
Your own week revolves around the kitchen problem: the food you've always cooked now turns your stomach, while the family repeats 'you're eating for two' as one roti struggles down.
Both have the same answer: this phase passes, and in these weeks quantity doesn't matter — keeping something down does. The baby is tiny; its needs are met from your body's stores.
The embryo is chickpea-sized — about a centimetre. The limb paddles are growing; fingers exist but are webbed together, separating over coming weeks.
The face assembles daily — nostril openings, upper lip, the first film over the eyes. Inside, the lungs' main tube is branching and the intestines lengthening.
And above it all, the week's headline: the brain's three sections taking their places, thousands of new cells a minute.
hCG is still climbing, so the nausea-fatigue-aversion trio holds. Excess saliva is this stretch's unspoken bother — hormonal too, and it passes.
The areolas are darkening, with small bumps appearing — the milk apparatus preparing months ahead. Not a disease.
And the mood weather — fine one moment, tears the next. Progesterone works on the brain as well. Tell the household it's hormones; being understood is half the cure.
If the first visit hasn't happened, this week is the right window — the dating scan (weeks 8-13) gets scheduled off it.
Two non-negotiables even in nausea: water (sips all day) and some protein (dal water, curd, chaas, roasted chana — whatever stays). Everything else is forgiven for now.
For the metal taste and saliva: elaichi, saunf, a wedge of lemon. After vomiting, rinse — don't brush immediately; stomach acid softens enamel and brushing then scrubs it away.
If work means long standing shifts or night duty, start plotting the change now. The legal accommodations come later, but arrangements set early sit easier.
The week's essentials in one place. Your doctor may adjust these for your situation.

Bleeding, worsening one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness — the same instruction as before: same-day hospital. By week seven the ectopic question should be settled — one more reason not to delay the first visit.
Fever past 100.4°F, urinary burning, or nothing staying down — all same-day items. High fever in early pregnancy needs treating in itself — with the doctor's medicine, not your own.
This article is general information only and no substitute for personal medical advice. The person who can advise you knowing your health, your medicines and your previous pregnancies is your obstetrician, or the doctor at your nearest health centre.
Enter the first day of your last period and your cycle length — your estimated due date, this week's count and the anomaly scan window all appear right here.
It is only an estimate — most babies aren't born on the exact date. A first-trimester scan dates a pregnancy more accurately; in the end, your doctor's date is the one that counts.
Q: Do sour cravings mean anything? People say boy/girl… — Cravings have no link to sex — just hormones and altered taste. Eat the imli; just keep it clean. Every folk method of sex-guessing is equally wrong.
Q: The tablet came up with the vomit — retake it? — If it came up whole within half an hour, retake; later, no. If it keeps happening, ask the doctor to shift the timing.
Q: Do papaya and pineapple cause miscarriage? — Ripe papaya and normal amounts of pineapple carry no evidence of harm; raw papaya is the one to avoid. When the household debates it, eat the ripe fruit and end the debate — no need to abandon the fruit bowl.
Q: When does eating for two start? — Never, in that sense. The entire extra requirement is about 350 calories — one small snack — and only from the second trimester. The need is quality, not quantity: iron, calcium, protein.
