
Blocks look like the simplest toy in the house and are the one with the most evidence behind them — for maths, language and spatial thinking.
Spatial reasoning — mentally rotating and fitting shapes — which is strongly linked to later maths and science ability, and which block play develops directly.
Early maths in the most concrete form available: counting, comparing, symmetry, fractions (two short blocks make one long one), balance and estimation.
Physics by experiment: stability, height, weight, what falls and why. A child who has built a hundred towers understands centre of gravity in their hands before they meet it as a word.
Language and negotiation, particularly in group building — describing, planning, disagreeing, and dividing a job.
And persistence. A tower that collapses and is rebuilt is a lesson in frustration tolerance that no adult explanation delivers.
Carrying and dumping, around eighteen months to two: blocks are moved rather than built with. This is a stage, not a failure.
Stacking and rows, around two to three: towers and lines, knocked down with enormous satisfaction.
Bridges and enclosures, around three to four: two blocks with a third across the top, and walls that go round something.
Patterns and symmetry, around four to five: deliberate design, matching sides, naming the structure.
Representational building, five and up: 'this is our house', 'this is the airport', with elaborate stories attached and other children involved.
Knowing the stages stops parents intervening at the wrong moment — a two-year-old dumping blocks is doing exactly what a two-year-old should.
Build alongside rather than for them, and let your own tower be imperfect. A parent who builds a beautiful structure ends the child's play.
Ask questions rather than giving instructions: 'what happens if you put the big one at the bottom?' 'How will you make it taller without falling?'
Give the language: tall, taller, balance, stable, wide, half, on top, underneath, behind. Spatial vocabulary is one of the strongest predictors of later maths, and block play is where it is naturally used.
Leave structures standing for a day where possible. Building over two days is a different and better kind of play than building and clearing in an hour.
What to buy: plain wooden blocks in a good quantity beat any themed set. Cardboard boxes, plastic containers, bottle caps and old CDs are all legitimate construction material — quantity matters more than quality.
Q: My child only knocks towers down. — That is the stage, and knocking down teaches cause and effect. Build a small one for knocking and keep another for building.
Q: Are expensive interlocking sets better? — Not for young children. Plain blocks are more open-ended; interlocking sets become useful around five or six when instructions and precision start to appeal.
Q: My daughter is not interested in blocks. — Try building something she cares about — a house for a doll, a shop, a zoo. Girls are given blocks less often and the spatial gains matter equally, so it is worth persisting with a purpose she chooses.
Q: How long should block play last? — As long as it holds. Twenty minutes is normal at three, an hour or more by six. Do not interrupt a child who is absorbed; that concentration is the most valuable thing happening.
